Lost Memory

For Flute Quartet

Instrumentation

4 Flutes

World Premiere by Les Quatre Flute Quartet

This piece is another piece on this program that is intimately composed. Lost Memory is a piece that was inspired by the first 2 months of the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic was hard for me as it was for a lot of people, there were times when I would wake up and forget to eat, or eat then immediately forget what I ate, would sit at my desk and work for hours then forget again. it was an endless cycle.

The piece had it’s official premiere on December 16th, 2020 as part of the CSUF Celebrations concert. Lost Memory is written with that in mind. Written for a Flute Quartet, this piece  features repeating melodies and themes, static harmonies and lack of melodic development. These repeating themes give an aural sensation of a ticking clock with no sense of ever going anywhere, making room for the other flutes to float above the ostinato line. In order to keep the music grounded, Flute 3 and Flute 4 exist as opposite sides of the same coin. Flute 4 represents the grounding methods I had to do in order to keep myself mentally stimulated to finish off the semester. Flute 3 represents the lack of movement in time. The dissonance in Flute 2 represents the disassociation between my body and my mind. Lastly, Flute 1 represents my mind. The lack of melodic development is equivalent to my memory loss during the first few months of quarantine.

Throughout the writing process, fragments and sections of this piece slowly began to appear and manifest themselves, slowly tickling and engaging my brain to write what I was hearing. What I didn't know then was what I was originally hearing wasn't intended for a flute quartet, rather it was intended for a woodwind quintet. Given that flute is my primary instrument, these melodic motives were perfect for an ensemble as intimate as a flute quartet.

Official Premiere - December 17, 2020
