Victor Gutierrez
Victor Gutierrez (b.1997) is a Brooklyn-based composer, performer, and actor. His compositional work ranges from orchestral and chamber music to film music with a touch of musical theater. Fascinated by psychology, Victor centers most of his compositional works around how colors relate to human emotions, continuously pushing the boundary between sounds and the human psyche. Raised in Southern California, Gutierrez creates works infusing diverse sounds and styles such as jazz, latin, pop, and avant-garde that reflect the highly diverse cities and neighborhoods in which he was raised.
Gutierrez started his career as the principle oboist for the Irvine Classical Players Orchestra (ICPO) under the baton of popular Southern California conductor Maxim Eshkenazy. Shortly after, he began playing the flute and oboe in musical orchestral pits for shows such as NINE. This new found appreciation for performing in musical orchestral pits led Victor to begin acting showcasing a darker, more complex characters in a multitude of shows such as The Hunchback of Notre Dome, Heathers, and Young Frankenstein. Gutierrez was previously commissioned by Santa Ana College to compose music for the original stage play One, written by William Mittler and Amberly Chamberlain. This opportunity led to a collaboration with director Christopher Cannon to score his short films As Mine and The House The Devil Built. His most recent collaboration was with directors Carlissa Gonzales and Christian Navarro to score their short film Auto Pilot.
Victor has written for a number of artists and ensembles such as Brightwork New Music Ensemble, The Rhythm Method, Blackbox New Music Ensemble, and Le Quarte Flute Quartet. In addition, Gutierrez has written for small student ensembles, getting his work performed in composer forums all throughout his undergrad. With a growing interest in collaboration, he hopes to continue his work as a collaborative composer composing chamber, film, staged and multimedia works.
Victor is currently living in Brooklyn, NY pursuing a Master’s Degree in Music Theory and Composition at NYU Steinhardt under Robert Honstein, Shelly Washington, and Herschel Garfein. He is currently attempting to write his most ambitious project to date, an even-length musical based off the convoluted life of the nine muses. In addition, he is currently working to compose a work for full orchestra, and a work for percussion ensemble. When he is not writing, he can be seen working as a wardrobe consultant, looking for the best bodegas in the city, or even in the kitchen cooking up some meals that remind him of his roots.
