World Premiere by The Rhythm Method during the NYU String Quartet Concert
This piece was inspired by a panic attack that I had in the early stages of this piece. After having said panic attack on what I wanted this piece to be about, I took a break and watched a documentary about black holes by Steven Hawking. I was so fascinated by Steven Hawking’s discovery that I spent the next week researching, reading, and listening to as much material that I was able to get my hands on. This piece reflects matter as it enters the black hole’s tremendous gravitational pull. Matter first approaches the black hole then once its inside, it is then sucked into the midway point which is called the Event Horizon. During this moment, matter, time, and reality are stretched, pulled, and broken up way beyond their limits. No one really knows what is at the end of a black hole but Steven Hawking describes it as a Singularity, a microscopic moment where matter is absorbed into the black hole and nothing seems to exists beyond that, or so they say. The movements reflect this process as are titled as such…
I. Entering the Black Hole
II. Event Horizon
III. Singularity
Many thanks to the people who have helped me throughout compositional process for this piece, especially Dr. Robert Honstein, Herschel Garfein, Kristian, and my entire cohort!
