This piece was a collaboration as part of the New Music Ensemble Common Thread Project that is centered around emotions during the pandemic. Fellow composers and I were the New Music Ensemble assistants during this time and we were assigned to start the project and hand the melody off to the next group.

The theme of the project was emotions during the pandemic and since we were already a few months into the pandemic, I decided to write something that didn’t deal with the current state of the world but looked for possible emotions for the future.

The melodic line in the horns and cellos was inspired and written from a weird and vivid dream. Laying down the material for the Horns and Celli, I sent the rough draft to Tyler and asked him to improvise a melodic idea using the pre-existing melody previously heard.

In this piece, the Horns and Celli represent the sense of hope and the piano represents the literal tunnel I saw in my dream. To continue to reinforce the idea of hope, we as a group chose to end the way we did to leave the listener wanting more.

Official Premiere - May 20, 2021
